St. Paul's Church (Paulskirche)

St. Paul's Church is by antonomasia, the national symbol of freedom and democracy in Germany, as it was here that on May 18, 1848 that the first freely elected National Assembly gathered to draft the constitution for a unified Germany, a process which later failed due to Prussia and Austria's opposition. The next uprisings that supported the imposition of a constitution were quashed and Parliament was dissolved by forceful means.

In 1852 St. Paul's Church was once again exclusively a place of worship. However, upon its reconstruction after World War II, St. Paul 's Church was no longer used for religious purposes. Instead it focused on its role as the 'Cradle of German Democracy', with exhibitions and commemorative ceremonies.
