Madrid’s Plaza Mayor was built in the 17th century as a market place and is now arguably the liveliest square in the city.

In 1589, Phillip II requested a newer, more attractive square to be built on the site of an old square, and construction was completed in 1619.  As a result of fires, the square was rebuilt in 1790, and a large statue of Phillip III was placed in the square in the 19th Century. In former times, the square was used as an arena for many public events, bullfights and for heretic trials – today, it is a stage for concerts and a popular attraction for tourists. Those searching for souvenirs will be sure to find something in Plaza Mayor. Every Sunday, stamp collectors gather in the square to swap and sell their treasures.
