Cuban Culture
Cuba’s history provides us with the explanations on how and why the country’s cultural components are what they are today. Cuba is a very small country, but it is definitely a melting pot of cultural and ethnic mixes from all sorts of places across the globe. While Cuba’s population is quite international, there are three main ethnic lines that make up the majority of components in Cuban society.
The aboriginal peoples of ancient times had an original contribution, despite the fact that they were later overpowered by the Spaniards and soon dwindled and died out. The Spaniards themselves where one of the most powerful influences in Cuban culture and continue to make up a great part of the backbone of ethnic Cuban society.
The picture would not be complete without the African component. First brought in as slaves by the Spaniards to replace the dwindling aboriginal population, their numbers soon increased and ever since have also had the most influence on the island’s culture. Evidence of the Spaniards is evident in the architecture of some of the colonial structures that are still standing today and in the language spoken by Cubans. African rhythms are always present in the upbeat, lively music that is constantly heard around the island and the delicious Cuban cuisine combines both Spanish and African techniques.
Lately, people from other places have moved to Cuba, particularly from Eastern Europe and China, contributing to Cuban society and culture and giving it even more unique features.
In order to get a grasp on Spanish, just as with any other language, it is important to immerse oneself in the culture of the people that speak it.
