About French

• The French language is a member of the Romance language group of the Italic subfamily of the Indo-European languages. As a Romance dialect, French is one of the languages descended from Latin. It is the third of the Romance languages in terms of number of speakers, outnumbered by Spanish and Portuguese.

• French is a widely spoken language throughout Europe as well as in other parts of the world. There are approximately:
  - 51 million first language speakers in France
  - 77 million first language speakers in the world,
  - 128 million French language speakers (including the second language speakers) in the world.
• It is an official or administrative language in various communities and organizations (such as the European Union, UNESCO, United Nations and Universal Postal Union, the International Monetary Fund, among others).
• French is also spoken in 53 other countries including Algeria, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Canada, CAR, Chad, Comoros Islands, Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, DRC, Djibouti, French Guiana, French Polynesia, Gabon.
