Tourism in Rabat
Although Rabat has been the administrative and political capital of Morocco since 1956, it has yet to receive the large number of tourists that cities such as Casablanca, Marrakesh and Fes have. This makes it a wonderfully peaceful, traffic-free, less hectic and more provincial version of these busier cities. While Rabat is laid-back and slow-paced, it maintains a cosmopolitan feel and is not afraid to embrace modernity.
Rabat offers a diverse cityscape that ranges from the ocean views of the palm-lined boulevard, the art galleries and hidden boutiques of the kasbah, the quite cafes of the historic medina, to the many ancient sites including mosques, mausoleums, monuments and museums, along with the famous Merenid necropolis of Chellah.
Rabat is well-known as a foodies' dream city, with a wealth of top restaurants serving traditional and international cuisine. Nightlife here is not as wild as it is further down the coast in Casablanca. However, an enjoyable evening can most certainly be had in Rabat, choose between trendy, hipster bars; modern, designer establishments; long-established local haunts, full of character; and USA-themed music bars.

Geography and Climate
The climate in Morocco varies depending on the region. The weather is warm and mostly pleasant along the coast, while inland the weather is dry and changeable. Towards the South, the weather is hot and dry for most of the year with very cool nights during the months of December and January and very warm and humid days in summer. The rain season in Morocco is between November and March.
Rabat is located on the coast of Morocco, by the Atlantic Ocean and enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Due to its coastal location the city has a mild, temperate climate all year round, with cool winters and warm summers. The nights are always cool and colder in the winter months of December to January.
Culture in Rabat
The Moroccans are famous for their hospitality and the people of Rabat are no exception. Although Rabat is a capital city, this has no reflection on the level of politeness and warmth of the people here. There are 2 million people living in Rabat, making it the second largest city in Morocco after Casablanca. Rabat might be the political capital but it is not the commercial capital - Casablanca holds that title. The civilised, cosmopolitan feel afforded by the well-dressed, middle-class people, the wide boulevards and not so hectic souqs in Rabat make it an ideal location for relaxed, Arabic courses in Morocco. You will have no problems asking for directions, eating out and shopping in Rabat - making it easy for exchanges in Arabic to happen while you are on your course here.
Shopping in Rabat
There are shops for everyone in Rabat - from flea markets to expensive boutiques. The difference between Rabat and the more hectic markets of Fes and Marrakesh, is that there is less bartering and most goods are sold at a fixed price.
Rabat was once an artisan centre and remains a great place for picking up locally made, handcrafted products. Rue des Consuls is one of the best places to go for stalls selling authentic, high quality gifts made using a range of traditional handicrafts.

Both Rabat's medina and kasbah offer a range of shops from homeware to food, to clothing and fine handicrafts. There are also a number of jewelery stalls offering elaborate gold and silver pieces.
Eating in Rabat
Rabat is a fantastic city for food. There is a variety of options available in the prized restaurants here, offering both traditional and international cuisine. Many of Rabat's restaurants are located in historic buildings of beautiful architecture with outdoor terraces for people watching.
There are a large number of stylish French restaurants in Rabat, whose tasteful interior design matches the quality of the food. Authentic Moroccon cuisine is served all over the city and features wood-filled tajines, scrumptious cous cous, lamb dishes and the famous Moroccan pastillas - meat pie traditionally made with fledgling pigeons.
Ramadan – a month of fasting
The Islamic fasting month of Ramadan falls during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The Koran stipulates that fasting – abstinence from food and drink – takes place every day for Islamic people, from dawn until sunset.
Although the fast symbolizes devotion to Allah, non-Muslims must also accept and respect the restrictions on eating, drinking and smoking during Ramadan. Many restaurants are likely to be closed during this period.
The Breaking of the Fast Festival ends the 30-day fasting period. It is celebrated in the first three days of the following month, and is one of the two most important Islamic festivals.
The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar year and therefore the dates on which Ramadan falls vary from year to year.
