Hauptwache
The Hauptwache is one of Frankfurt 's central squares
which provides easy access to Zeil and Friegas streets, the
Maintower, the Goethe House, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange
and the Old Opera House, and not far away is the city's old
quarter and the Römerbeg. At the same time the
Hauptwache is the central area for local public transport.
For a long time the Hauptwache was
a police and civil guard post; here, Councilor Senckenberg
(brother to the naturalist) and the notorious 'Schinderhannes',
among others, 'did time' and served their sentences. The Hauptwache
became historically important in 1833, when groups of young
revolutionaries tried establishing the Republic during the
events known as Wachensturm (surveillance storm).
From 1970 onwards, reconstruction and remodelling
of the Hauptwache began, and today it houses a bistro-café
with tables and chairs set up on the square, around the old
police station. It is a great meeting place and ideal for
just relaxing after an outing; have a good draught beer or
eat one of those sausages that has made Germany so famous.
While taking a German
Language Course in Frankfurt be sure to head over to the
Hauptwache to enjoy an afternoon in the sun and the
charming surroundings.
