The Imperial Cathedral
(Kaiserdom)
The gothic tower belonging to the Cathedral in Frankfurt is
a noticeable landmark in the city's old quarter. Although
in a strict sense it is not actually a cathedral as it is
not a see, the parish, founded in 852 and dedicated to St.
Bartholomew in 1239, it received the honorific title of Imperial
Church in the 18th Century. Since then it has been the backdrop
for 10 imperial coronations.
Among the cathedral's treasures are St. Barholomew's
15th Century frieze, furniture dating back to the mid 14th
Century, the Altar of May Sleeping created in 1434 and the
Crucifixion in the early 16th Century.
The 96 meter high gothic tower was finished
only after the reconstruction made after the great fire of
1967, when several historic bells were lost, melted in the
fire. Those game enough to climb the 324 steps up the tower
will be rewarded with an incredible panoramic view, even though
this is a little rare at the moment due to the restoration
work still going on.
