The museum called Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is found in an impressive building from the 18th century.  It was originally designed as a hospital, and was at one stage even considered for demolition.  Following its restoration in the '80s, however, the building now has a modern edge, and it contains a range of contemporary art dating back to the 19th century to present day works. The development of art over time is quite apparent in the diverse styles on display. Along with the museum’s permanent collection, several other collections are often on show.
