The valuable private art collection of this museum has been open to the public since 1993. Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Borne took over his father's collection of paintings to enlarge it and increase its value. This was how work by modern artists were added to the classical master pieces already part of the collection.

The museum also offers several tours, workshops and lectures on different subjects.
