The train station
was built between 1888 and 1892 under the direction of Alberto
del Palacio Elissagne and Gustave Eiffel, designer of the
famous Eiffel Tower in Paris. The roof consists of a cast
iron and glass construction in Art Nouveau style. In 1992
the interior was redesigned to handle the AVE, the Spanish
high speed train service.
The old station has been turned into a tropical garden and
the temperature there now hovers around a steady 24ºC
all year round. Travelers awaiting connecting trains will
gladly stop for a coffee break in the enjoyable green atmosphere
of the station’s gardens.
