Parque del Retiro was constructed in
1633 upon a commission by Phillip II. He used the park as
a refuge from his demanding tasks as ruler, as a place for
his relaxation and recreation. Since then the park was constantly
enlarged and today comprises a total of 120 hectares. Its
present mixture of English and French garden styles was established
since the late 19th century.
In the center of the green area is an artificial lake, to
which many locals come on the weekends. Street artists and
fortune tellers try and earn a few coins here and many families
and couples settle under the trees for lazy enjoyable picnics.
There are also a large number of restaurants nearby to choose
from for a tasty lunch. The glass Palacio de Cristal houses
interesting displays of modern art.
Visiting this peaceful park to enjoy nature
is a great way to spend your free time while taking a Spanish
Language Course in Madrid.
