One of Paris’ most famous avenues, the French have also
dubbed it “La plus belle avenue du monde"(the world’s
most beautiful avenue). Spanning the city from the Concorde
square to the Arc de Triomphe, this picturesque avenue has
been recently renovated and is bordered on both sides by broad
sidewalks and dotted with plane trees.
The Champs Elysées (Elysian fields) in actual fact
started out as fields, until in 1616, Marie de Medici decided
to create a pathway lined with trees. Over the years it was
extended and became very fashionable to walk along it. In
1828, the Champs-Elysées became city property and footpaths,
fountains and gas lighting was added.
Situated in the heart of the French capital, the Champs Elysées
is a symbolic part of Paris, along with the Arc of Triomphe
and the Eiffel Tower, among others. It is the stage for many
important events, such as the 14 of July parades, the New
Years Eve gatherings and the arrival of the Tour de France
cycling race. It is regarded one of the most famous streets
in the world. Enjoy its cinemas, cafes and shops or simply
enjoy a stroll with all there is to see.
