Diving Volunteer Great Barrier Reef
This volunteer program is located in one of the most picturesque towns in Australia: Port Douglas is just an hour’s drive from Cairns via a spectacular coastal road that is surrounded by forest and the Coral Sea. The aim of the Environmental Diving Volunteer program is twofold; on the one hand, we provide much needed volunteer assistance to dive boats and operators in Port Douglas. On the other, we offer all our volunteers a unique and diverse experience that will expose them to many aspects of the Great Barrier Reef and dive-boat operation. This in turn will hopefully give our volunteers a greater understanding of diving and preserving our reef through sustainable use.

Some of the things you will do as a volunteer on the program:
- cleaning and rubbish removal on 4 Mile Beach with Project Aware
- around 4 dives per week on the Great Barrier Reef
- gear setup and cleaning of dive gear
- cleaning of boat and equipment
- taking part in a weekly trip or activity with other volunteers
- reef teach talk
- monitoring of sea life and looking for any detrimental human impact
- trash and weed removal
- visit to Mossman Gorge
- Learn to Dive
Program requirements:
As a volunteer on the dive project you must:
- be 18 years old or over
- have a Padi Open Water Diver qualification or similar
- apply for the appropriate visa for entry into Australia
- have no major health problems
- be moderately fit e.g. can hike for several hours without problems
- proficient in English
- possess initiative and enthusiasm for the environment
- be willing to work, rain or shine!
Our 5-day „Learn to Dive“ course in Cairns is not only an amazing way to explore the underwater world in Australia, but will also provide you with the necessary certificate to become a diving volunteer!

You can join the program for as little as 4 weeks or as long as 3 months. All accommodation and breakfast will be provided for on the program.
