German Art and Architecture
German art has a long and distinguished artistic tradition, from the earliest known work to contemporary art. When considering art and architecture in Germany, aside from examining the conditions under which this artwork was created and what traditions influenced that development, it is also necessary to keep in mind the character of the country's people. As emotion is one of the main German characteristics it is not a strange thing that expression is a principal ideal of German Art, even more so than beauty.
During the thousands of years before the formation of the current German territory, the concept of "German art" needs to include also those works that originated in German-speaking regions such as Austria, Alsace and much of Switzerland, as well as largely German-speaking cities or regions to the east of the modern German borders.
