Extremadura

Extremadura is made up of two provinces, Cáceres and Badajoz. The capital is Mérida, a place frequently visited due to its impressive Roman ruins. Merida has distinct historic importance as one of the most important cities during the Roman Empire, and later during the Christian and Moorish conflicts it was on the border of both warring factions. During the reconquista, several famous conquerors came from this region.

Extremadura is known mainly for its incredible landscapes. Dotted with several mountain ranges, namely Cordillera Central, Montes de Toledo and Sierra Morena, in Extremadura there are also river valleys and broad plains called Lower Extremadura. Its continental climate provides for warm summers that can surpass 30°C and winters on the other hand can get fairly cold.

Just as in many regions of Spain, in Extremadura one will find exquisite natural wonders, preserved in natural parks. The valleys of the Tajo and Guadiana rivers are in fact ecological reserves. Extremadura is not visited as frequently as other areas of Spain and the local traditions have been well preserved. Enjoy the age old customs, the traditional dress, beautiful handcrafts and a delicious local cuisine, accompanied by an exquisite wine of the region.
