| Spanish Flamenco Music | Pepe Habichuela
Pepe Habichuela, born in 1944 in Granada,
lives in Madrid since 1964; that was where his career took
off: in the famous Tablao "Torres Bermeias". Together
with his brother Juan, Pepe is one of the most renowned figures
of the Guitar Dynasty of the Habichuela family. Two other
brothers also belong to this family, Luis and Carlos. The
Flamenco Fusion Group "Ketama", which includes Pepe’s
sons as musicians, further reflects the successful musical
continuation of this Dynasty.
Pepe Habichuela made his name when he collaborated
with great singers such as Juanito Valderrama, Pepe Marchena,
Carmen Linares, Camarón
de la Isla and Enrique Morente as well as joint works
with representatives from other musical styles, for example
with jazz trumpeter Don Cherry. Several international tours
gave him exposure to other countries besides Spain and thus
increased his popularity.
Habichuela has released two Albums, on which
his solo pieces are recorded. One of them, appearing in 1983
was entitled “A Mandeli”, a tribute to
his grandfather and founder of the Dynasty. The album features
pieces which have reached very high Standards in the Flamenco
scene, as have those released on his second album, “Habichuela
en rama” in 1997.
The name Pepe Habichuela stands for new
as well as traditional Flamenco. Even so, Pepe is constantly
looking to use his creativity and openness of mind to look
into new things and other music styles, resulting in a unique
style of his own – a particularly interesting fusion
of traditional and modern tones.
