The Typical Spaniard

The typical Spaniard
  • Life between modern trends and diverse traditions
  • Optimistic attitude & joy of living
  • Typical clichés are often not accurate and lead to wrong conclusions

The big question is if we can really talk about a ‘typical Spaniard’ anymore. Considering the globalized world we live in today, everyone is in touch with a host of different cultures and differences between these different cultures begin to blur a little. Barriers begin to fade as immigration and the mass media continue to grow.

  • Nowadays, cultural diversity is the prevalent factor. You will still find plenty typical Spanish dishes, traditions and customs, however foreign ideas, products and even traditions have filtered into the country and are hardly the exception anymore.
  • Arabian culture has left a pronounced mark on Spanish culture. The ever growing amount of immigrants flowing into Spain in recent decades have also influenced and thus enriched Spanish society. An example of this outside influence is the impact on the language and “borrowed” words.

If we use the typical cliché to describe a Spaniard, we might, for example, immediately think of a tall dark Latin lover, outgoing, warmhearted, who goes bar crawling and eats tapas and tortilla with sangria, and who enjoys a good bullfight on a Sunday afternoon. But are they all really like that? We would actually be more accurate if we sidestepped such clichés. A trip to Spain will confirm that such fore drawn conclusions can be misleading and totally wrong.

  • Spaniards can also be a little reserved in manner, although this is not usually expected. This and many other things such as the traditions and customs will vary from region to region. It is thus quite difficult to pinpoint exactly what a Spaniard is really like.
  • However, should you be interested in finding a word that we can safely assume describes all Spaniards as a whole, it would be the "savoir vivre" attitude that most carry with them; Spaniards generally have a positive outlook on life and make sure they enjoy it!

However, Spain is still a land filled with traditions from its interesting past and rich cultural background.
