European Union citizens planning to travel to the United States should be aware that their policy has changed radically in recent years.
Most western european residents wishing to travel to the United States for reasons of tourism or business for a period not exceeding 90 days do not need a visa under the terms of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). This also applies to nationals of the following 25 countries: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan , Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Norway, New Zealand, Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland.
The passports of all those who decide to travel to the United States must be machine readable, even those covered by the Visa Waiver Program.
Steps to qualify for the Visa Waiver Program include: a) your country falls within the list of countries covered by the ENP or VWP, b) having a machine readable passport, c) applying for entry for a period of less than 90 days for tourism or business, d) have a return ticket on an airline, e) complete and sign a Form I-94 class, exemption of non-immigrant visa, which is usually given on your flight f) does not fall into the categories not inadmissible by law in the United States. Citizens of countries requiring a visa should apply in their home country. These can be of several types:
Pro - Business: Negotiations; Consulting Business Participation in scientific conferences, educational, professional conferences, seminars and other activities of commercial and professional field.
Scholars and Researchers: Researchers; Medical residents or medical researchers, professors, lecturers, students in exchange programs.
Students:
Study at universities or other academic institutions.
