Rabat takes its name from the fortified monastery of Ribat, which was built in the 10th Century by Berbers and Spanish Umayyads on the Oudaia Rock. The medina, Rabat’s historic center, is beautiful and wonderfully peaceful, with alleys adorned by flowers and whitewashed houses.
