Rabat takes its name from the fortified monastery of Ribat, which was built in the 10th Century by Berbers and Spanish Umayyads on the Oudaia Rock. Later, in the 17th Century, the town was strongly influenced by Andalusian refugees. The medina, Rabat’s historic center, is beautiful and wonderfully peaceful, with alleys adorned by flowers and whitewashed houses.
