Almudena Cathedral

In 1879 construction of the cathedral began. It was completed well over 100 years later, when in 1993, Pope John Paul consecrated it and the statue of Our Lady of La Almudena, the patron saint of Madrid was moved from the San Isidro church to the cathedral. The building style of the cathedral's first phase of construction reflects 13th century architectural features. In 1944 construction continued with a decidedly classical style. In 1955 the cloister was added and finally in 1993, after the Pope's consecration was the building referred to as a cathedral.

The cathedral's forecourt offers a wonderful view of the lower lying areas of the city and of the Parque del Oeste.

At the Cathedral's base remains of the wall that once surrounded the moorish settlement can still be seen.
