Plaza Mayor

Madrid’s Plaza Mayor was established in the 15th century as a market place and is nowadays the liveliest square in the city.
In 1617, Phillip III ordered a newer, more attractive square to be built, of which the Phillip III statue standing in the square bears witness. In days gone by, the square was the stage for bullfights and heretic trials – today it is a stage for concerts. For those searching for souvenirs, Plaza Mayor is the place to go. Every Sunday stamp collectors gather in the square to swap and sell their treasures.
