Asturias
Some of Asturia's most important cities include Gijon and Aviles, as well as the capital Oviedo. Asturias is filled with tall mountain ranges referred to as the Cordillera Cantabrica. Here you will find impressive natural parks and preserves such as Picos de Europa, Covadonga and Somiedo. Besides its mountains and parks, Asturias is well known and loved for its lush green landscapes, enchanting Costa Verde (Green Coast) and small, picturesque fishing villages.
The Camino de Santiago, a well-known road used by pilgrims and dotted with endless monuments is a well known feature of Asturias, as is the "Silver Route" or Ruta de la Plata. Both have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Asturias is also home to a host of customs and traditions, which are exceedingly interesting to newcomers. The region is well-known for its Asturian folklore and typical craftsmanship as well as the incredibly tasty local dishes. Seafood is a specialty here, along with sidra (apple cider) and fabada (a dish made with blood sausage, beans and cheese).
