Cuban Art in the 19th Century

It wasn’t until the mid nineteenth century that national Cuban art began to appear. Intellectual circles in Cuba grew and flourished, as traces of the Romantic movement showed up in paintings, with influences from particularly French and North American schools.

As the years passed, academicism and romantic styles became outdated and decadent and movements such as naturalism, avant-gardism and modernism stepped in, coinciding with the turn of the Century.
