Diego de Siloé

Diego was born around 1490 and was the son and pupil of the eminent Gil de Siloé.  Diego, like his father, was a sculptor but he is actually remembered in history more for his architectural skills. One of the main artists to contribute to the transition of Gothic art to Renaissance art, he studied in Italy where he worked alongside Bartolomé Ordoñez and became a major representative of the plateresque style.

Returning to Burgos in 1519, he worked in several cathedrals on commission. His masterpiece, the Granada Cathedral is one of the most impressive building constructed using plateresque influence and was built in 1528. Another of his celebrated works is the Golden Staricase (Escalera Dorada) at the Burgos Cathedral.
