This historical
theatre opened its doors for the first time in 1870 and to
this day remains the oldest surviving theatre in Europe. It
was constructed over the ruins of what used to be the Príncipe
Alonso Theatre. Surviving a fire that practically destroyed
it, it was abandoned for many years, almost coming to ruins.
But in the mid-eighties reconstruction began which was to
last many years. Nowadays this theatre stands out for the
great variety of performances and shows performed on its stage.
