| Spanish Classical Music | Plácido Domingo
Spanish opera star, Plácido Domingo, was born on January
21, 1941 in Madrid and is renowned worldwide as one of the
greatest tenors in history. At the early young age of eight
he moved with his parents to Mexico City to study music at
the Conservatory, focusing especially on the piano, song,
composition and orchestra conducting. It was here that he
debuted as an opera singer alongside his parents (famous Zarzuela
performers at the time).
In the next few years, Domingo sang as a member of the Israeli
National Opera, appearing in opera houses all over the world,
such as Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg, Vienna and many more.
In 1965 he sang at the New York City Opera for the first time,
and three years later at the Metropolitan Opera. Domingo was
by then regarded as one of the greatest tenors of his time
and countless performances all over the world followed at
an exhausting pace.
Among his most applauded performances were the Italian operas
by Donizetti, Puccini and Verdi. He also performed in Bizet’s
“Carmen” and in operas by Richard Wagner,
appearing in recordings of many opera house productions. Since
1973 audiences began to enjoy his conducting skills for the
first time when he led the orchestra through the “La
Traviata” Opera.
Since 1990 Plácido Domingo delighted audiences around
the world along with fellow countryman José Carreras
and Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, appearing in their “Three
Tenor” concerts. In 1996 Domingo was artistic director
of the Washington Opera and in 2000, of the Los Angeles Opera.
