Guide to Nice in the French Riviera

guide Nice

Tourism in Nice
Nice is more than the capital of the Côte D' Azur. It is the fifth largest town in France and contains great wealth of fine architecture and culture. Ruins, museums, boutiques, outdoor markets, an appealing café culture and a vibrant night life make Nice a great place to visit.

  • Basilica Notre Dame

The largest church in Nice is the oldest of the modern religious structures erected in the heart of a new town after the Comté de Nice became part of France.

  • L' Opera

Built in 1885 by the Nicois architect Francois Aune as an imitation of Palais Garnier in Paris, this is one of the most decorative French theatres, with its seafront facade, its ceremonial staircase and painted ceiling.

  • Matisse Museum

This completely renovated 17th-century Genoan style villa in the heart of the olive grove in the Gardens of Cimiez, houses the personal collection of the great Fauvist painter who lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954.
Works from all periods of his life, offer a comprehensive panorama: from the first paintings made in 1890 to the famous gouache cutouts, total of 236 drawings and other illustrations.

Nice Culture

The atmosphere in Nice is very relaxed and thanks to rich history of the region, it has a very distinct culture. In addition to the French Riviera carefree culture, there are also tangible Italian and Corsican influences.

And with Jazz Festival in July, Carnival in February, and art exhibitions whole year round, there is always something going on in Nice.

Eating in Nice
Nice is the only place worldwide where you can enjoy the authentic taste of "le vrai pan-Bagnatica" (with garlic bread and salad), "the pissaladière" (beef with onions and black olives), as well as "Tourte of Assembly "(cake with pine nuts).

The city has around 300 restaurnates they offer to visitors various kinds of food. Some examples are:

  • "Ratatouille," "Alioli" (mayonnaise with garlic and olive oil)
  • "Soupe au Pistou" (with garlic sauce, cheese and basilicum)
  • "Porchetta" (roast pork with a sauce of milk)
  • "Gnocchi" or "Ravioli"

With regard to wine, you can find a variety that comes from the region, such as wine from Belle (with designation of origin).

Shopping in Nice
In the Cote d'Azur there is everything. La Rue Massena specializes in fashion shops and perfumes, French or Italian specialties found in shopping malls like "Nice Etoile" and "Galeries Lafayette"

Nice Climate & Weather
A pleasant Mediterranean climate makes Nice an ideal vacation spot.  Beautiful weather and warm, crystal blue water draw tourists from all over the world.

Winter periods are mild and sunny too and pleasant for tourists' stay.
