The well known Mexican pop artist referred to has Thalía, was born on August 26, 1971 in Mexico City and was christened Maria Ariadna Thalía Sodi Miranda. The youngest of five, Thalía began mingling with the music and performing world at an early age. She participated in a TV commercial at the young age of just one and later on took part in talent shows and pageants. Other competitions and auditions came next in teenage Thalía’s life. From the age of four, she was taking regular ballet lessons and studying piano at Mexico’s Conservatory.
Her performance-oriented childhood led to small parts in movies and musicals until in 1986 she joined Timbiriche, a popular group in Mexico at the time. In no time at all, she became one of the groups most important members and in the meantime began starring in her first soap opera “Pobre señorita Limantour”. She left the group three years later in 1989 to embark on her solo career. This took place in Los Angeles, the city to which she moved during that year, learning to play the bass guitar and recording her first album, entitled “Thalía” which was released in 1990.
And so her musical career took off. She released more albums “Mundo de Cristal” and “Love” and at the same time did a brief stint as a TV show host before starting to star in a series of soap operas (María Mercedes and María la del Barrio). She released another album (En Extasis) and launched her own lingerie line. By this time she had grown immensely popular and her albums had record sales, not only in Mexico but in all of Latin America and even Europe, particularly Spain. However such a busy and hectic schedule caught up with her in 1996 when she was admitted into hospital for cardiac arrhythmia, caused by stress. After a few months’ rest, she was back in business, releasing more records. In 1999 she married Tony Mottla, Mariah Carey’s ex and president of the record company, Sony Music.
Thalía is one of the world’s most well known female performers and has received a host of prizes and awards. She is actually currently in the Guinness Book of Records for having received the most awards and acknowledgements in just one night.
