How the Language Proficiency Test Works

Our online language test measures how well you understand and use a language across grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension. You'll answer a series of questions that get gradually harder as you go, so the test finds your level without wasting your time. It is effectively a CEFR test: your result maps to the same A1 to C2 scale used by schools, universities and employers across Europe.

The moment you finish, you'll see your level on screen, from A1 for beginners to C2 for near-native speakers. There's nothing to download and nothing to pay, and you can retake the test whenever you like to see how far you've come.

Understanding the CEFR Language Levels

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, known as the CEFR, is the standard used across Europe to describe language ability. It was developed by the Council of Europe and sorts proficiency into six levels, grouped into three bands: basic, independent and proficient. Your test result corresponds to one of these levels, so you can measure your skills against a recognised benchmark and set a clear goal.

Level Band What you can do
A1 Basic user Understand and use everyday phrases, introduce yourself, and ask simple questions about familiar things.
A2 Basic user Handle short, routine exchanges and describe your background, surroundings and immediate needs.
B1 Independent user Follow the main points of clear standard speech, cope while travelling, and talk about your interests and plans.
B2 Independent user Understand complex texts, hold a fluent conversation with native speakers, and argue a point of view.
C1 Proficient user Express yourself fluently and spontaneously, and use the language flexibly for social, academic and professional life.
C2 Proficient user Understand virtually everything you read or hear, and express yourself precisely in demanding situations.

Why Knowing Your Language Level Matters

Knowing your language level turns a vague sense of getting better into something you can actually measure. A short language level test tells you which course will challenge you without overwhelming you, which is why we use a placement test to put every learner in the right group from day one. It also helps if you're preparing for an official exam, such as IELTS or Cambridge for English, DELE for Spanish, DELF for French, or the Goethe-Zertifikat for German, since each one is tied to a CEFR level. And when you can name your level, you can set a realistic goal for where you want to be by the end of your course.

A language proficiency test measures how well you can understand and use a language across reading, grammar and vocabulary. It places your ability on a recognised scale, most often the CEFR levels from A1 to C2. Unlike a quiz, its purpose is to show your current level rather than to teach you new material.

CEFR stands for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It is a standard developed by the Council of Europe to describe language ability in a consistent way across different countries and languages. The framework defines six levels, from A1 for beginners to C2 for the most proficient users.

The CEFR has six levels grouped into three bands. The basic user band covers A1 and A2, the independent user band covers B1 and B2, and the proficient user band covers C1 and C2. A1 describes someone who can use simple everyday phrases, while C2 describes someone who can understand almost everything they read or hear and express themselves with precision.

You can test your level in seven languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Arabic. Each language has its own test that gives you a CEFR result for that language, and you can take as many of them as you like.
