Esercizi sul condizionale inglese online

Prima di partire con gli esercizi che lo riguardano, facciamo un breve ripasso: il primo condizionale inglese (first conditional) corrisponde al periodo ipotetico della realtà. Lo usiamo per parlare di situazioni reali -o possibili- nel futuro.

Segue questa struttura:

If + present simple per il periodo ipotetico

will + verbo base per la frase principale

Vediamo un esempio:

• If it rains, I will stay at home → Se pioverà, starò a casa.
  (è probabile che piova, perché il cielo è nuvoloso, perché lo hanno annunciato le previsioni e perché, comunque sia, non è niente di lontano dalla realtà)

Ecco ora un paio di esercizi a riguardo da svolgere.

Esercizio 1: Completa le frasi inserendo la forma corretta dei verbi tra parentesi.

1. If I ______ (study), I will pass the exam.
   
2. If she calls me, I ______ (answer).
   
3. We will go to the park if it ______ (not/rain).
   
4. If you don't hurry, you ______ (miss) the train.
   
5. He ______ (help) you if you ask him.

Spiegazione: dopo "if" devi usare il present simple, mentre nella seconda parte usi will + la forma base del verbo, ovvero l'infinito senza il "to". Alla luce di questo, avremo:

1. If I study, I will pass the exam.
2. If she calls me, I will answer.
3. We will go to the park if it doesn't rain.
4. If you don't hurry, you will miss the train.
5. He will help you if you ask him.

Esercizio 2: Collega la condizione con la sua conseguenza logica:

A. If you eat too much sugar,
B. If I see him later,
C. If they don't leave now,
D. If we finish work early,
E. If it gets colder,

1. we will go for a drink.
   
2. you will get sick.
   
3. I will say hello.
   
4. they will miss the bus.
   
5. I will wear a jacket.

Le risposte corrette in questo caso sono:
A-2, B-3, C-4, D-1, E-5

Passiamo adesso al second conditional, che si usa per parlare di situazioni ipotetiche o irreali nel presente o nel futuro. In particolare, di cose che non sono vere o che comunque è poco probabile che si avverino

La struttura in questo caso è:

If + past simple per la proposizione ipotetica

Would + verbo base per la frase principale

Vediamo un esempio:

• If I had a car, I would drive to work. → Se avessi un'auto, andrei al lavoro in macchina.
  (ma non avendola, non si può avverare)

Ricorda che, in questo caso, con il verbo to be si usa spesso la forma were con tutti i soggetti, anche con "I":

• If I were rich, I would travel the world. → Se fossi ricco, viaggerei per il mondo.

Passiamo ora agli esercizi:

Esercizio 1: Completa le frasi inserendo i verbi nella forma corretta.

1. If I ______ (be) taller, I would play basketball.
   
2. She would buy a new dress if she ______ (have) enough money.
   
3. If we ______ (live) in New York, we would go to Broadway shows.
   
4. They ______ (be) happier if they changed jobs.
   
5. If he studied more, he ______ (get) better grades.

Spiegazione: dopo "if" in questo caso usi sempre il past simple, mentre nella frase principale "would" più il verbo alla forma base. Perciò, avremo:

1. If I were taller, I would play basketball.
2. She would buy a new dress if she had enough money.
3. If we lived in New York, we would go to Broadway shows.
4. They would be happier if they changed jobs.
5. If he studied more, he would get better grades.

Esercizio 2: Trova e correggi l'errore in ogni frase:

1. If I will see her, I would tell her the truth.
   
2. If we has more time, we would travel.
   
3. They would go out if it don't rain.
   
4. If she know the answer, she would help us.
   
5. I would call you if I am at home.

Correzioni:

1. If I saw her, I would tell her the truth.
   
2. If we had more time, we would travel.
   
3. They would go out if it didn't rain.
   
4. If she knew the answer, she would help us.
   
5. I would call you if I were at home.

Non ci resta che passare al terzo condizionale inglese (third conditional), ovvero il tipo di condizionale che si usa per parlare di situazioni irreali nel passato, ovvero eventi che non sono successi, ma che avrebbero potuto avere conseguenze diverse. Con un esempio è tutto più chiaro:

• If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam. → Se avessi studiato di più, avrei superato l'esame.
  (Ma siccome non l'ho fatto, non l'ho superato. Ed essendo ormai passato, non c'è altro che si possa fare.)
  

La struttura, quindi, in questo caso è:

If + past perfect per la proposizione ipotetica
would have + participio passato per la frase principale

Fondamentale, per poter costruire il third conditional, ricordare per bene i verbi irregolari in inglese per il participio passato.

Detto questo, vediamo anche qui un paio di esercizi:

Esercizio 1: Completa le frasi inserendo i verbi tra parentesi nella forma corretta

1. If he ______ (listen) to me, he would have avoided the mistake.
   
2. We would have arrived earlier if we ______ (take) a taxi.
   
3. If she ______ (not forget) her umbrella, she wouldn't have gotten wet.
   
4. They ______ (win) the game if they had trained more.
   
5. I wouldn't have been tired if I ______ (go) to bed earlier.

Spiegazione: dopo if ci serve il past perfect, mentre nella frase principale would have + participio passato. Perciò, avremo:

1. If he had listened to me, he would have avoided the mistake.
2. We would have arrived earlier if we had taken a taxi.
3. If she hadn't forgotten her umbrella, she wouldn't have gotten wet.
4. They would have won the game if they had trained more.
5. I wouldn't have been tired If I had gone to bed earlier.

Esercizio 2: Scegli la frase corretta tra le due opzioni

1. a) If I had known, I would have come.
   b) If I knew, I would have came.
   
2. a) She would had told me if she saw me.
   b) She would have told me if she had seen me.
   
3. a) We wouldn't have missed the train if we had left earlier.
   b) We wouldn't missed the train if we had left earlier.

Risposte corrette:

1. a) If I had known, I would have come.
   
2. b) She would have told me if she had seen me.
   
3. a) We wouldn't have missed the train if we had left earlier.

Esercizio 3: Riscrivi usando il terzo condizionale

Esempio:
I didn't call you. You didn't come.
→ If I had called you, you would have come.

Frasi:

1. She didn't take an umbrella. She got wet.
   
2. We didn't book a table. We didn't eat at the restaurant.
   
3. He didn't study. He failed the test.
   

Possibili soluzioni:

1. If she had taken an umbrella, she wouldn't have gotten wet.
   
2. If we had booked a table, we would have eaten at the restaurant.
   
3. If he had studied, he would have passed the test.
   

Non lo abbiamo trattato in questa lezione, ma ricorda che esiste anche lo zero conditional, per parlare di fatti generali, verità scientifiche o situazioni che accadono sempre quando una certa condizione è soddisfatta. Usiamo il present simple per entrambi i verbi della frase: if this happens, this happens.
