Learn English in London as an Adult

If you want to learn English in London, you are choosing a city where the language is used everywhere, every day, on the Underground, in cafés, at street markets, and at work. Greater London is home to around 10 million residents (Greater London Authority, 2024 mid-year estimate), and between them they speak over 300 languages, which makes London one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the world. English is still the shared working language for all of them. For an adult learner, that turns the whole city into a classroom. We at SPRACHCAFFE have run language travel since 1983, and our London school sits in the green West London district of Ealing.

London Is Your Classroom

Afternoons belong to you. Museums, markets, excursions to Brighton, Oxford

So far, I have nothing to complain about regarding the school. I find the environment really relaxed, with lots of experience sharing and people from different cultures, which adds a lot to the immersion and learning of English. Teacher Joana is always cheerful and brings really good activities that make us interact productively, besides the content itself being very dynamic.

London puts English into everyday use

Few cities offer English in such a varied and internationally relevant form. You can walk through Ealing in the morning, take the Elizabeth line into the centre in about 20 minutes, and by lunchtime have navigated the Tube, ordered a coffee, and spoken with someone from a completely different part of the world. That is immersion, and in London it happens on its own.

The city also rewards curiosity. Between the National Gallery, the British Museum, one of the world's largest English-language theatre districts in the West End, and the markets of Camden and Borough, every afternoon after class can turn into its own discovery. London was named the top global destination in TripAdvisor's 2025 Travellers' Choice Awards, which draw on millions of traveller reviews submitted over the preceding year.

How adults learn English most effectively

Adults make the fastest progress when classroom study is combined with daily real-world use. Research on second-language acquisition shows that learners advance more quickly when comprehensible input, meaning the listening and reading described by Stephen Krashen (1985), is paired with comprehensible output, meaning the speaking and writing described by Merrill Swain (1985), in authentic settings.

London gives you both at once. In class, your English classes in London bring grammar, vocabulary, and all four skills together in a small group with a qualified teacher. Outside class, you practise in shops, on public transport, at the homestay dinner table, in pubs, at museums, and on weekend trips. The people you meet, classmates from many countries and hosts who live the language every day, become as much a part of the learning as the lessons themselves.

I improved my conversational English skills here. Very friendly, excellent teachers and great company with the friends I made too! I would say the prices are fair but high, which is normal for London. You get what you pay for, as they say

English courses and CEFR levels for adults

Adults come to London with different goals. Some want professional fluency, some are preparing for an exam, and some simply want to regain confidence after years away from the language. Every participant takes a placement test on arrival and joins the group that matches their level, measured against the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) from A1 to C1. The course ends with a SPRACHCAFFE certificate confirming the level reached and the lessons completed.

We offer two main course types for adults aged 18 and over. The Standard Course runs 20 lessons of 45 minutes per week on weekday mornings, with a maximum of 12 students per class. The Intensive Course adds 10 afternoon lessons for 30 lessons per week, also with a maximum of 12 students. An afternoon Standard Course with up to 18 students is available as well.

Both courses can be combined with optional workshops in Business English, Job Applications and Interviews, Sales and Marketing, Communication Skills, Public Speaking, or English Drama. For exam goals, IELTS preparation and Cambridge English (FCE and CAE) preparation are available from a minimum of four weeks. IELTS is a useful target for many learners, as the test is recognised by more than 6,000 institutions and organisations worldwide. One week is the minimum stay for general English, and two weeks or more gives the best results.

Ealing, our base in West London

We have chosen Ealing as the home of our English-language school in London for good reason. Known historically as "The Queen of the Suburbs", a nickname it earned in the late 19th century when its tree-lined avenues drew middle-class families out from central London, Ealing is a leafy residential district in West London with the postcode W5. The Elizabeth line connects Ealing to central London in about 20 minutes and to Heathrow Airport in about 15 minutes (London Borough of Ealing). You get the energy of one of the world's great capitals, with easy arrival and departure, and without being overwhelmed by it.

Our London school was founded in 1990 and is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English. Classes are kept small, so every adult gets real, personal attention from qualified and experienced teachers.

Ealing - a leafy residential district in West London, postcode W5 - was nicknamed "The Queen of the Suburbs" in the late 19th century, when its tree-lined avenues and parkland attracted middle-class families from central London. Today, Ealing combines suburban calm with excellent transport links: the Elizabeth line (opened 2022) connects Ealing to Central London in approximately 20 minutes, and to Heathrow Airport in approximately 15 minutes.

Accommodation and getting around London

We arrange homestay accommodation with carefully selected host families in West London, all within 45 minutes of the school by Tube or Elizabeth line. Living with a host family gives you a comfortable base and natural English practice at the dinner table. Self-catering and half-board options are available, along with a residence option for those who prefer more independence, and every accommodation includes Wi-Fi.

Getting around is straightforward. London's public transport network is extensive, and the school sits on the Elizabeth line into the centre. An Oyster card or a contactless bank card covers all journeys, and free Wi-Fi at the school means a British SIM card is not essential. London is one of Europe's more expensive cities to live in, so it helps to plan a weekly budget for transport, meals, and free-time activities before you travel.

Beyond the classroom

The afternoons are where London opens up. Our leisure programme typically brings the city within reach with guided sightseeing, visits to museums and parks, and full-day excursions to nearby destinations such as Brighton, Oxford, Bath, and the Cotswolds. The longer your stay, the more you can fit in. This is also where the friendships form, the part of a language stay that often lasts long after the course ends.

Everyone here was so nice and always here to help me with anything. School activities were brilliant, we saw many places in London. I really enjoyed it.

With 30 lessons per week, a complete beginner typically needs around 12 weeks to reach an advanced level, and about 8 weeks when conditions are especially favourable. Individual factors such as age, prior knowledge, and how much you practise outside class all affect the pace. As a guide, one CEFR level usually takes several weeks of intensive study combined with daily real-world use.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality and the length of your course. After the United Kingdom left the European Union (Brexit), citizens of the EU, the EEA, and Switzerland are also subject to UK entry rules. For courses up to six months, most non-UK nationals can study on the Standard Visitor Visa (Short-term Study), either as a visa application before travel or as an entry stamp on arrival, depending on nationality. Courses longer than six months require a Student Visa, sponsored by a licensed UK education provider under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) rules. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens now also need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for short stays, in addition to a valid passport. Working is not permitted on the Standard Visitor Visa. SPRACHCAFFE provides a letter of acceptance where required, and you should always check the latest rules at gov.uk or with your local British embassy before booking.

London's public transport network is extensive and easy to use. The school sits on the Elizabeth line, which reaches central London in about 20 minutes. An Oyster card or a contactless bank card covers all journeys across the Tube, buses, and trains. A British SIM card is not essential, as free Wi-Fi is available at the school and UK SIM cards are easy to buy on arrival.

London is one of Europe's more expensive cities for everyday living, so transport, meals, and free-time activities add up alongside the course itself. Homestay accommodation usually helps, since it bundles a room and often meals into one arrangement. Planning a realistic weekly budget before you travel makes the stay far easier to manage.
