The CEFR English Levels

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes English ability in six levels, used across Europe. Your test result matches one of them.

LevelBandWhat you can do in English
A1Basic userUse simple everyday phrases and answer basic questions.
A2Basic userHandle short, routine conversations on familiar topics.
B1Independent userManage most travel situations and explain your opinions.
B2Independent userUnderstand complex texts and talk fluently with native speakers.
C1Proficient userUse English flexibly for study, work and social life.
C2Proficient userUnderstand almost everything and express yourself precisely.

The CEFR sorts English into six levels across three bands: A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), and C1 and C2 (proficient user). A1 means you can use simple everyday phrases, while C2 means you can understand almost everything you read or hear and express yourself with precision.

Both exams use the CEFR scale, so your result is a useful guide. A B2 result corresponds to roughly IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 and TOEFL iBT 72 to 94, while C1 points towards IELTS 7 to 8. These are general comparisons based on the exam boards' own CEFR alignment, not official conversions.

The fastest way to improve is to use English every day in real situations. A course abroad combines daily lessons with constant practice, which moves you up the CEFR scale faster than studying at home. SPRACHCAFFE runs English courses in Malta, England, Canada and South Africa for every level. For current options, visit our English programme pages.
