Clauses w angielskim: zdania podrzędne i względne

Clause (zdanie składowe) to grupa wyrazów z podmiotem i orzeczeniem. Każde pełne zdanie angielskie zawiera co najmniej jedno zdanie niezależne.

Zdanie niezależne (Independent Clause)

Wyraża pełną myśl i może stać samodzielnie.

The sun is shining. / I love coffee.

Zdanie podrzędne (Dependent / Subordinate Clause)

Ma podmiot i orzeczenie, ale nie wyraża pełnej myśli, więc wymaga zdania niezależnego. Zaczyna się od spójnika (because, although, when, if) lub zaimka względnego (who, which, that).

...because she was tired. → She went to bed early because she was tired.

Czym są Clauses w angielskim

Typ spójnika Spójniki Przykład
Czas (Time) when, after, before When the bell rang, we left the class.
Przyczyna (Reason) because, since I stayed home because I was sick.
Warunek (Condition) if, unless If it rains, we'll stay inside.
Kontrast (Contrast) although, even though Although she was tired, she kept going.
Cel (Purpose) so that She saved money so that she could travel.

Różne typy

Zdanie podrzędne na początku oddzielamy przecinkiem. W time clauses i po if o przyszłości nie używamy will: If it rains, nie If it will rain.

Zdania przydawkowe w angielskim (Relative Clauses)

Relative clauses opisują rzeczownik. Wprowadzają je zaimki względne: who (osoby), which (rzeczy), that (osoby i rzeczy), whose (przynależność), whom (dopełnienie, styl formalny) oraz where i when.

Defining relative clauses

Są kluczowe dla sensu zdania i nie mają przecinków.

The student who studies hard will succeed.

Zaimek w funkcji dopełnienia można pominąć: The book (that) I bought is great.

Non defining relative clauses

Dodają informację dodatkową. Wydzielamy je przecinkami i nie pomijamy zaimka.

My brother, who lives in Berlin, is a doctor.

Zasada: that stosujemy wyłącznie w defining relative clauses, nigdy po przecinku.

Pozycja przyimka w zdaniach względnych

  • Styl potoczny (przyimek na końcu): The friend I went to the cinema with.
  • Styl formalny (przyimek na początku): The friend with whom I went to the cinema.
  • Po przyimku na początku używamy tylko whom, which lub whose, nigdy who ani that.
