All the way back in 1843, Western Canada’s oldest city, Victoria, was founded. Originally, the city, that takes its name from Queen Victoria, was used as a trading post for the Hudson Bay Company. Fifteen years later in 1858, the city quickly grew with the Fraser Valley gold rush. Victoria became the passage way to the Colonies of British Columbia and Vancouver Island and, because of its importance, when the colonies joined together and became part of the Canadian Confederation in 1871, Victoria became the province’s capital.
Fast forward to the twentieth century when Victoria became principally known for its government, tourist attractions, and serene retirement locations. The majority of employment opportunities in Victoria lie in industries such as building and repairing ships, fishing, and the manufacturing of machine and forest products. The city is also home to Canada’s western naval base. Because of the dense concentration of production coming from this area, the city is seen as somewhat of a research center for marine, forestry and agriculture.
