Alonso Berruguete (Paredes de Nava 1490 - Toledo 1561)

Son of Spanish painter Pedro Berruguete, the painter and sculptor Alonso was born in 1489 and formally trained first at home in the family studio and later in Italy, where he came into contact with models of the Ancient Classics and Mannerism, and where he was greatly influenced by Italian great, Michelangelo.

He later returned to Spain and worked mainly as a sculptor with works such as the famous choir stalls found in the Toledo Cathedral and the altar in the Irish College, in Salamanca. Both his sculptures and paintings hint of influences by some of the greatest Italian artist of the Renaissance, namely Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Andrea del Sarto and Donatello, to name a few. He is said to have been commissioned as a painter of the King's court in Spain and ennobled in 1559. His works are not only found in Spain, but also in Budapest, London, Munich, Rome and Florence.
