Sierra Maestra

Sierra Maestra has been a star of Cuban music since the late 70’s when the band appeared on the scenes with an old-style son line-up, as in the great days of the 20’s and 30’s. Made up of a guitar, tres, trumpet, bongo, güiro and singer, they were pioneers in recovering the Son legacy for new generations to enjoy.

They called themselves Sierra Maestra in honor of the mountain range bearing the same name, cradle of the son.

The band played an important role in the Cuban music’s recent popularity throughout the world. Juan de Marcos González, the band’s ex director, created the Afro-Cuban All Stars and Buena Vista Social Club while he was still part of Sierra Maestra, and Jesus Alemañy, the band’s trumpeter for 15 years, left the group to create "Cubanismo!".

In recent years, they are more active than ever: in 2002 they featured in the movie "Salsa!" and were also in charge of the movie’s music. They released "Rumbero Soy", with which they toured the world for live concerts.
