Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870)

Born on February 17, 1836, in Seville, this Spanish poet was son of Don José Domínguez Insausti, a well known painter in Seville. Both his partent died when he was very young (orphaned at the age of 7) and was brought up by a series of relatives.

In 1854 he moved to Madrid and tried writing and even a little painting to provide a means of oncome. Contracting an illness of which little was known about, he moved to Soria and Veruela in attempt to restore his health and in 1861 he was married. His marriage was not a happy one, and ironically during this period he wrote some of his best literature, both prose and poetry such as "El Contemporáneo".

Divorcing his wife, he went to live with his brother and worked as editor of a magazine La Illustración de Madrid. He died in 1870, at a very young age, leaving three sons.
