The Zapatista Movement

A Zapatista uprising ensued in 1994, in Mexico’s southernmost state of Chiapas, which pointed out the high levels of poverty which still exist in Mexico. The demands of this peasant army which calls itself Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) and which took control over San Cristóbal de Las Casas were improved social and economic conditions.

The gap between the rich and poor in Mexico is still considerable. Although the Mexican Army soon retook control over the region, the Zapatista movement continues to this day.
