The CEFR French Levels

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes French ability in six levels, used across Europe. Your test result matches one of them.

LevelBandWhat you can do in French
A1Basic userUse simple everyday phrases and answer basic questions.
A2Basic userHandle short, routine conversations on familiar topics.
B1Independent userManage most travel situations and explain your opinions.
B2Independent userUnderstand complex texts and talk fluently with native speakers.
C1Proficient userUse English flexibly for study, work and social life.
C2Proficient userUnderstand almost everything and express yourself precisely.

The CEFR sorts English into six levels across three bands: A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), and C1 and C2 (proficient user). A1 means you can use simple everyday phrases, while C2 means you can understand almost everything you read or hear and express yourself with precision.

DELF and DALF are the official French diplomas from France Éducation international, and each one matches a CEFR level exactly. DELF covers A1 to B2 and DALF covers C1 and C2. So a B1 result here points you towards the DELF B1, and a C1 result towards the DALF C1.

The fastest way to improve is to use French every day in real situations. A course abroad combines daily lessons with constant practice, which moves you up the CEFR scale faster than studying at home. SPRACHCAFFE runs French courses in Nice and Paris for every level.
