The CEFR Italian Levels

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes Italian ability in six levels, used across Europe. Your test result matches one of them.

LevelBandWhat you can do in Italian
A1Basic userUse simple everyday phrases and answer basic questions.
A2Basic userHandle short, routine conversations on familiar topics.
B1Independent userManage most travel situations and explain your opinions.
B2Independent userUnderstand complex texts and talk fluently with native speakers.
C1Proficient userUse English flexibly for study, work and social life.
C2Proficient userUnderstand almost everything and express yourself precisely.

The CEFR sorts Italian into six levels across three bands: A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), and C1 and C2 (proficient user). A1 means you can use simple everyday phrases, while C2 means you can understand almost everything you read or hear and express yourself with precision.

CILS (from the University for Foreigners of Siena) and CELI (from the University for Foreigners of Perugia) are the main official Italian exams, and each level maps to the CEFR scale from A1 to C2. So a B1 result here points you towards the CILS or CELI at B1.

The fastest way to improve is to use Italian every day in real situations. A course abroad combines daily lessons with constant practice, which moves you up the CEFR scale faster than studying at home. SPRACHCAFFE runs Italian courses in Florence for every level.
