Grades: The UK curriculum is divided into key stages, each corresponding to a specific age group:
- Key Stage 1: Ages 5-7
- Key Stage 2: Ages 7-11
- Key Stage 3: Ages 11-14
- Key Stage 4: Ages 14-16
- Key Stage 5: Ages 16-19 (A-levels or vocational programs)
Most exchange students are placed in Key Stage 4 or Key Stage 5, depending on their age and the discretion of the local school authorities.
School Year: The school year is divided into three terms: Autumn, Spring, and Summer, each lasting approximately 11-16 weeks.
The academic year typically starts in September and ends in June.
School Hours : Most secondary schools run from Monday to Friday, with classes starting around 8:30 a.m. and finishing at 3:30 p.m. and many have on-site cafeterias where students enjoy lunch together. Some schools may also offer after-school clubs, homework support sessions, and Period 6 (extra lessons).
School Uniform: Up to about age 15, students typically wear school uniforms or follow a dress code, adding to the unique British school atmosphere.
Curriculum : The curriculum includes core subjects such as Englisch, Mathematics and Science. Students can also choose from a wide range of electives, including Biology, Chemistry, Social Sciences, Visual Arts, Economics, Languages ( French, Spanish, German) Geography, and many more. This variety allows students to explore their strengths and discover new interests.
School Holidays : English high schools have several breaks throughout the year:
- Christmas Break: Late December to early January
- Half-Term Breaks: One week in October, February, and May
- Easter Break: Usually two weeks in April
- Summer Vacation: Late July to early September
These breaks give students time to rest, explore England, and prepare for the next term, balancing studies and personal growth.
