Grades: High school in Canada typically starts in grades 8, 9, or 10, depending on the province, and continues until grade 12.
School Year: The school year usually begins in September and ends in June. Students also have the option to attend summer school, which allows them to take extra courses or improve their grades.
School Hours : Most high schools run Monday to Friday, with classes starting around 8:30 a.m. and finishing at 2:30 p.m.
Academic Structure : Canadian high schools can follow either a semester system, where students take four subjects per semester, or a linear system, where students study eight subjects throughout the entire year. Exchange students often have the opportunity to create their own schedules, choosing courses that match their interests and exploring subjects that may not be available in their home country.
Curriculum : The curriculum includes core subjects such as Mathematics, English Literature, and History. Students can also choose from a wide range of electives, including Biology, Chemistry, Social Sciences, Visual Arts, Economics, Languages, Geography, and many more. This variety allows students to explore their strengths and discover new interests.
School Holidays : Canadian high schools have several breaks throughout the year:
- Winter Break: Usually from late December to early January
- Mid-Winter Break: In March
- Spring Break: Typically in spring
- Summer Vacation: From July to August
These breaks give students time to rest, spend time with family, and prepare for the next part of the school year.
