How to Write and Say “Thank You” in Every Language

How to translate the word "thank you" into all the languages of the world | How many times do we say "thank you" to someone in our lives? We say thank you for a favor granted or a compliment received, for being kind, positive, and polite.

Expressing gratitude is also important when traveling, to thank a waiter who brings us a drink or the hotel receptionist who gives us the keys to our room, and so on.

Whether you're in another country for work, studying a new language with Sprachcaffe, or just on vacation with your family, read on to learn how to say thank you in Spanish, German, French, and many other languages.

In this article, we at Sprachcaffe have compiled a list of ways to say thank you in every language, so you can consult them whenever you want.

Why Say Thank You?

What's the main reason people say "grazie"? Generally, we say "grazie," "ti grazie," or even "grazie mille" to express our gratitude, to show the other person we appreciate what they've done for us.

We thank someone who offers us a hand in the kitchen washing the dishes, someone who holds our place in line while we go to the bathroom, someone who carries our heavy luggage to our room in a hotel, someone who gives us a bouquet of flowers, and someone who holds the elevator door open for us as we rush to the door.

This doesn't mean, however, that we only express gratitude for physical help. As mentioned earlier, we often thank someone for a compliment that brightens our day, or for helpful advice, for constructive criticism from a teacher at school, or for feedback on our work project. Celebrities, like actors and singers, often thank fans for their support on social media, just as athletes thank their fans after games. Therefore, if you appreciate a gesture, you should thank them.

Say Thank You in All the Languages of the World

Different peoples around the world express their gratitude in different ways, and therefore say "thank you" using entirely different words and expressions. Some languages are more common and well-known than others, due primarily to the number of speakers, but also partly to the representation of certain cultures in the entertainment industry, such as Japanese anime or documentaries about the drug war in Mexico.

Among the most well-known ways of saying "thank you" are "thank you" (in English), "xiè xiè" (in Chinese), and "arigatō" (in Japanese), but also "merci" (in French) and our Italian "grazie."

Learning all the world's languages is certainly a daunting task, but knowing the most important expressions for greeting and thanking can be useful when traveling.
