The CEFR Spanish Levels

CEFR levels A1 to C2

Your result is given as a CEFR level. The CEFR, or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is the international standard for describing language ability. It was developed by the Council of Europe and is used worldwide to compare language skills fairly. It defines six levels, grouped into three bands: basic users (A1 and A2), independent users (B1 and B2), and proficient users (C1 and C2). The table below explains what each level means in practice.

CEFR levelNameWhat you can do
A1BeginnerYou understand and use everyday expressions and very basic phrases, and can introduce yourself and answer simple personal questions.
A2ElementaryYou communicate in simple, routine tasks and describe your background, immediate environment and basic needs.
B1IntermediateYou handle most situations while travelling in a Spanish-speaking country, describe experiences and give brief reasons for your opinions.
B2Upper intermediateYou interact with fluency and spontaneity, understand the main ideas of complex texts, and discuss a wide range of topics with native speakers without strain.
C1AdvancedYou express yourself fluently and precisely, understand demanding texts, and use Spanish flexibly for social, academic and professional purposes.
C2ProficientYou understand almost everything you read or hear with ease, summarise information from different sources, and express yourself precisely in complex situations.
