What Is a Gap Year Abroad and What Can You Do During It?

Just finished school and don't know what to do next? Take a gap year abroad and continue learning, but this time in another country! There's nothing better right now than speaking languages.

In terms of work, language skills open many doors and opportunities, but that's not all: learning a foreign language means broadening your horizons and seeing things from a new perspective, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of realities far removed from our own.

And being able to do this in a country where the language is spoken is something else entirely: the linguistic, cultural, and social immersion that Sprachcaffe offers is an opportunity you shouldn't miss, and now is the perfect time to embark on a new adventure!

So, what are you waiting for? Read on to find out everything about our gap year program: what you need to do to book, which destinations we offer, and all the services included in the package.

What is a Year Abroad?

If you didn't understand what we were trying to tell you, then you're in exactly the right place!

In this next paragraph, we want to explain what a year abroad is and why it might be exactly what you're looking for.

By the term "year abroad" we mean a period of break between learning, working and everyday life, which usually happens around the time of graduation from school.

Ultimately, this is the time when you feel most drawn to get out into the world, discover new things, and find out what you like most or least, or rather, what you would find exciting to do. In short: to find your place in this incredibly diverse world!

You probably still don't know what you want to do after graduating from school, and you have a few months free before you go to university, find your first job, or start your own business. Now is the perfect time to solidify your foreign language skills or learn a completely new language.

And what better way to do that than a year abroad? Sprachcaffe offers you exactly that: a chance to make the most of these bridging months and improve your language skills, as well as your CV; and even more importantly, to fill your mind with memories, experiences and personal development.

Plan Your Year Abroad with Sprachcaffe

Now you know all the qualities that make a year abroad an experience you absolutely must have, especially if you choose to embark on your big adventure with Sprachcaffe. After all, it's our core mission, and we truly do everything we can - even the impossible - to ensure our students have the most comprehensive, effective, and enjoyable experience.

Included in our trips is everything you need to learn in a welcoming environment that makes you feel at home, even far from home. We know how difficult it can be to spend so much time in another part of the world, in a place where everyone speaks a different language. That's why we strive to provide all the services and amenities that can make it easier and more enjoyable.

Don't wait for the perfect moment to come along, or you'll never leave. The perfect time is now, and it's already here: It's time for you to give something for yourself and for your future, to better understand who you are and where you want to go. Travel is the key to self-discovery, and doing so while learning a language allows you to simultaneously acquire essential language skills that will greatly benefit you in the future.

Remember that with Sprachcaffe you can tailor your trip to your personal preferences and choose between:

  • the length of your trip, with a minimum of 8 weeks
  • The frequency of your language course: choose between a standard course (4 lessons per day) and an intensive course (6 lessons per day).
  • the accommodation (in some cases there are several options, such as a host family, hotel or residence)
  • You can spend your free time however you like; you can join us or explore the surroundings on your own.

Sprachcaffe schools are always well connected to the city center, major attractions and accommodations, so you can easily get around on foot or by public transport.

Full board is usually included in the package, so you don't even have to worry about lunch or dinner. In some cases, other services such as housekeeping and laundry are also included, but these are specific details you can learn more about by reading the page for the destination you're interested in.

In any case, we're talking about an opportunity you shouldn't miss, a journey that will change your life and show you the world from a different perspective. After all, every country has its own customs and ways, its own nuances, and it's difficult to understand these if you don't go there yourself. But if you do, the awareness you gain will accompany you into so many aspects of your life.

How do Gap Years Work?

Regardless of the destination you choose, all our study abroad programs are structured in the same way and follow the same logic.

The first thing you should know is that the minimum duration of the year abroad is 8 weeks: This means you're not obligated to stay abroad for a whole year if you don't feel like it, especially if it's your first experience far from home. In fact, such a long time can be daunting: Therefore, you have the option to determine the length of your stay based on your goals and feelings.

In any case, the Sprachcaffe team will be there to support you in organizing your year abroad and to ensure that your experience is as enjoyable and exciting as possible.

Of course, the maximum duration is 12 months, and in some cases you can choose to extend your stay!

The weekly course price decreases with increasing length of stay, but the service you can count on remains the same.

Included in the price you will find

1. Language course;
2. Full board (if available);
3. Various types of accommodation, depending on your destination (host family, residence, etc.)

The minimum age required to participate in most of our courses is 18, but don't worry: with Sprachcaffe you can even embark on your big adventure earlier, thanks to our study abroad programs for teenagers!

Remember that for us, a learning journey isn't just about classes and courses, but also-and perhaps even more importantly-about activities and fun. In fact, we believe that the free time you spend exploring the city is a vital part of your learning experience! It allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture, interact with locals, and explore the world around you-and this is a key focus for Sprachcaffe during our study abroad programs.

Accordingly, you'll have free time over the weekend to plan your days and explore the country. Alternatively, you can book exciting activities with us that we have in store for you: from excursions and guided tours to sports, cultural activities, and beach parties, you can be sure that with Sprachcaffe there will never be a dull moment!

Advantages of Taking a Year Abroad

By now you've probably noticed: there are a lot of advantages to a year abroad! But we haven't looked at many of them yet: let's find out more about them!

First and foremost, you should know that personalizing your trip isn't just about the length of your year abroad; it's also crucial to choose the length and frequency of your language course. Only you know how many lessons you need to develop your language skills and, even more importantly, to maintain them. We all perform differently under the same circumstances, so you can decide what works best for you.

Specifically, you can choose between the following:

  1. Standard course, which includes four teaching units
  2. Intensive course, which includes six teaching units.

Each lesson lasts 45 minutes.

In any case, the lessons will take place in the mornings, from Monday to Friday. This means that you have the afternoons and weekends free to use your time, for example, to explore the country you are in.

In any case, these courses differ from the standard courses we offer for language stays, as they are designed to run over a much longer period of time.

Another advantage of our year-long courses abroad is that you can learn at any language level: We offer courses from A1 to C2 level, and C1 and C2 levels are possible upon request.

But how do you know your language level, you might be wondering? Don't worry, we'll take care of it. We'll send you a language test before your trip to determine your level and then place you in the learning group that best suits your skills.

In addition to the truly great benefits of our year abroad, there's the opportunity to forge international friendships.

Not only will you need these to deepen your language skills, since the language you're learning will be the only one you and your classmates have in common, but it will also be an incredibly valuable asset to take away from this experience. We're proud to say that we've seen wonderful friendships blossom, and it's one of the characteristics that makes our learning journeys such a special experience.

A Year Abroad: Yes! But Where?

You can consider yourself lucky to have met Sprachcaffe: because our company is an important link and over the last 40 years we have never stood still, quite the opposite!

Gap Year Abroad Options: What to Do and Where to Go

When you're planning a year abroad, the last question you'll ask yourself is what to do: there will be so many options that you won't even have time to think about it. You'll wonder if it's possible to make the days even longer so you can do everything and make the most of every moment.

First of all, you'll have the opportunity to live in a completely new place. Not just spend a weekend there or go on holiday. No, you'll be living there in the truest sense of the word. This means your possibilities are almost endless: you can explore every inch of your host city. And when you choose Sprachcaffe, you know you can count on one of the most popular destinations in the world, as we've seen! Imagine, for example, living for a whole year - or as long as you want - in the world's most famous metropolis, London. With everything this city has to offer in terms of history, culture, and entertainment, a lifetime wouldn't be enough to truly appreciate it all!

In short, it really depends on the destination you choose and the type of holiday you're looking for. On the one hand, there are seaside locations that allow you to quickly go for a swim between classes, also because of the short walk from the school to the beach (we've really thought of everything, haven't we!). On the other hand, there are places that are very interesting from a nature perspective: here you should definitely take some excursions.

Remember that Sprachcaffe organizes many exciting leisure activities that you can participate in or not, depending entirely on your personal preferences and organization. In our destinations, we'll take you to the main attractions, but we also organize excursions to more special, magical places that you wouldn't discover if you were just a tourist.

In your free time, you have complete autonomy to decide what you want to do. You can study in the classrooms at school, you can go to bars, restaurants, and shops on the promenades. Or you can go to the nearest park and enjoy the sun while reading a good book or talking to one of your classmates-you can really do whatever you want.

Sprachcaffe sees this free time as a fundamental building block in your learning journey. It might seem contradictory at first glance, but you only need to think about it for a second to see that it isn't: When you're on your own in a city you don't know, where a language other than your native tongue is spoken, you have to adapt in a certain way. You'll be motivated by the fact that you have to put your language skills to the test, for example, by asking a pedestrian for information, answering a question from an employee, or placing an order in a restaurant… in short, if you want to communicate, there's no easier way than this.

And all of this, combined with structured language instruction, makes it the most functional school in existence. It's the total immersion that forces you to step outside your comfort zone. Stop being ashamed to speak a new language and give yourself the chance to shine.

Through all of this, we know that your self-confidence and self-awareness are constantly growing. You will discover what you are truly capable of, and you will realize how all your fears arose solely from the limitations you imposed on yourself. You will be free to express yourself, and at that point, you can be certain: no one will ever be able to stop you!
