Jobs Abroad That Will Improve Your Language Skills

Is there a better way to learn a language than by working in the country where it's spoken? Whether it's a full-time job, an internship, or volunteer work, working abroad will offer you new and fascinating insights into the local culture, while also allowing you to contribute to their society through your interactions with locals and your work.

Below, we've compiled a list of exciting opportunities.

Internship at Eurocultura

Eurocultura, based in Vicenza, Italy , arranges around 250 internships annually for individuals interested in improving their Italian language skills. Applicants are matched based on their professional qualifications and the expectations of the various companies.

In addition to internships, Eurocultura also provides accommodation, cultural programs, and an Italian language and culture course for participants.

An internship in Vicenza with Eurocultura means sharing accommodation with Italians, navigating daily life in a new city, and naturally learning to communicate in Italian . This internship offers the perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to enhance their Italian language skills while working in Italy.

Sprachcaffe's Working Holiday Programme

Sprachcaffe can help you organize a job in Canada or the USA, starting with a minimum 8-week language course on-site to bring your language skills up to the necessary level before Sprachcaffe places you in a job.

Whether marketing, service, IT, retail, hospitality, skilled trades, or administration - there's a perfect job for everyone. The Working Holiday program typically lasts 24 to 48 weeks (minimum 8 weeks).

The program is open to interested individuals aged 18-20 who already have a B2 level of English proficiency.

Language Cafe Team

Being a team leader is more than just a summer job. As a team leader, you're a tour guide, city guide, best friend, and confidant all rolled into one - in short, the number one contact person for the language students on site.

You actively shape the students' stay: you spend free time with them, celebrate with them, organize information sessions, and accompany excursions.

First-time team members receive €140 per week, while experienced team members earn up to €165 per week. As a Sprachcaffe team member, you'll have the opportunity to travel to exciting destinations like Malta, France, or England, and you won't have to worry about flights, accommodation, or food costs, as Sprachcaffe covers everything. Team members can be hired for a minimum of three weeks and can work for up to three months. New team members are recruited every year between March and November.

Ski Instructor

During the winter holidays, you can improve your French or Italian skills by working as a ski instructor in Switzerland. If you'd like to escape the heat and can't wait to get back on the slopes, you can even work as a ski instructor in the summer! Australia and New Zealand, also have fantastic winter sports destinations - perfect for ski and snowboard enthusiasts... and since they're in the Southern Hemisphere, their winter coincides with our summer. So why not start the ski season on the other side of the world, sharing your passion for skiing or snowboarding with others while also improving your English skills?

Water Sports Instructor

If the beach appeals to you more than the snow, how about watersports? Whether it's sailing, windsurfing, surfing, waterskiing, or wakeboarding, you could land a summer job as an instructor at a seaside resort.

Especially in the Mediterranean region (including Spain, France, and Italy ), watersports courses with good wind conditions for sailing and waterskiing are offered. For surfing, it's better to head to the Atlantic coasts of England, France, or Portugal. If you're willing to leave Europe, you'll also find great surfing hotspots in Morocco, the USA, and many other destinations.

Hut Warden in the Alps

In winter as in summer, people travel to the mountains for mountain biking, hiking, climbing, and much more. If you enjoy entertaining others, working as a chalet manager could be the perfect experience for you.

A chalet is a specific type of mountain cabin, primarily found in the Alps. All you have to do is keep the chalet clean, be welcoming and sociable, and in some cases, cook. The rest of the time, you get to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature while perfecting your French or Italian, depending on which part of the Alps you're in.

Volunteering - Volunteer Work Abroad

While people all over the world volunteer, Africa, South Asia, and Central and South America offer a particularly wide range of volunteer opportunities, often requiring only minimal prior experience. Combine service, adventure, and education while improving your language skills, especially if the language you're learning is Spanish, French, or English. From Mexico to the southern tip of Chile, Spanish

is spoken in almost every South American country. The most popular countries for volunteering are Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia. However, if you'd prefer to improve your French, Africa is the place to go. French is an official language in numerous African countries and is spoken by a large portion of the population in Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Togo, Senegal, Mauritius, the Comoros, and the Seychelles.

English, on the other hand, is spoken in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Kenya. Two popular English-speaking destinations outside of Africa are Jamaica and India. Of course, many of these destinations also have their own local languages, some dating back to before European colonization.

Trying to communicate in the local language will certainly make a good impression on the locals. Among the most widely spoken languages are Hindi and Punjabi (India), Yoruba and Igbo (Nigeria), Hausa (Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Togo), and Swahili (Kenya). We've listed a few organizations that arrange volunteer opportunities:

World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF)

WWOOF offers a completely different volunteering experience with opportunities all over the world, not just in developing countries. As a volunteer (or WWOOFer), you live next to your host, who also provides your meals. In return, you help with the daily tasks on the farm and experience farm life firsthand.

There is an incredible variety of options, from working on husky farms in Finland to working on fruit plantations in Australia . With work opportunities on every continent except Antarctica, you'll have no trouble finding a chance to improve your language skills.

HelpX

HelpX offers a similar concept to WWOOF. However, here you also have the opportunity to help out on non-organic farms, with host families, ranches, cabins, bed and breakfasts, backpacker hostels, and even on sailboats. You could help a family furnish their new apartment in Paris, work at the reception of a lively backpacker hostel in Argentina, or support the construction of an "EcoLodge" (also called a "green hotel") in the Nicaraguan rainforest.
