French Numbers from 1 to 100 and Beyond
Tips for Learning French Numbers
To master the formation of numbers in French, it's a good idea to first memorize the French numbers from 1 to 20. You simply have to learn these by heart, as there's no rule for this. Starting with 21, you add "et un" (translated as "and one"), so 21, for example, becomes "vingt et un." All other numbers between 20 and 60 are formed by learning the tens and connecting the ones with a hyphen (for example, 33 is called "trente-trois").
This is pronounced as it is written; the two numbers are simply said one after the other.
For the tens 70, 80, and 90, you'll have to get used to special rules. The 70 is formed by 60 plus 10 (hence "soixante-dix"), the 80 is formed by four times 20 (hence "quatre-vingts"), while the 90 is formed by four times 20 plus 10 (hence "quatre-vingt-dix").

Hyphens in French Numbers
Before 1990, the use of hyphens in French numbers was somewhat inconsistent - while some numbers used them, others did not. The 1990 spelling reform (rectifications orthographiques de 1990) simplified this rule: every part of a compound number must now be joined by hyphens.
Examples:
- 22 → vingt-deux
- 61 → soixante-et-un
- 99 → quatre-vingt-dix-neuf
This rule applies to all numbers up to one million. That said, older spellings without full hyphenation are still accepted in formal or traditional writing, so you may encounter both forms in books and documents.
Commas and Periods in French Numbers
French punctuation in numbers works differently from English. In English, a comma separates thousands and a period indicates decimals: 5,000.25.
In French, it's the reverse: 5 000,25.
Key reminders:
- A space separates thousands: 300 000 000 (not ).
- A comma marks decimals: 2,5 euros = "2.5 euros."
Capitalization Rules
When written in words, French numbers are always lowercase, unless they appear at the beginning of a sentence.
Examples:
- quatre-vingt-dix-sept
- deux cents soixante mille
- Soixante-dix-neuf mille quatre cent vingt-huit (capitalized only because it starts the sentence)
This convention holds true in both formal and academic writing. Using lowercase maintains harmony and clarity in written French, a subtle detail that reflects accuracy and linguistic style.
Conclusion: It gets easier from the Number 100 onwards!
As you've probably noticed, a pattern emerges when counting in French starting with the number 100. You simply add the hundred and the number you learned based on the admittedly somewhat confusing rules between 1 and 100.
The most challenging part of learning French numbers is understanding the rules within the first 100 numbers. Once you've mastered the French counting from 1 to 100, you'll easily be able to count to a thousand in French. By the way, a thousand is called " mille " in French.

FAQs
What are the French words for numbers 1 to 10?
They are un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, and dix. Each word is distinct, so the best way to master them is through repetition-say them out loud until they sound familiar and easy to pronounce.
How can I count from 1 to 100 in French?
Start by memorizing the multiples of ten: vingt (20), trente (30), quarante (40), cinquante (50), and soixante (60). Then, combine these with single digits to form other numbers- for example, vingt-deux (22), trente-sept (37), or cinquante-neuf (59).
From 70 onward, French follows a slightly different pattern: soixante-dix (70), quatre-vingts (80), and quatre-vingt-dix (90).
Why do numbers from 70 to 99 look different in French?
This comes from an old counting system based on twenties (called a vigesimal system). Instead of inventing new words for seventy, eighty, and ninety, French combines existing ones:
- soixante-dix literally means "sixty-ten" (70),
- quatre-vingts means "four twenties" (80),
- quatre-vingt-dix means "four twenties and ten" (90).
How do you say 100, 1,000, and 1,000,000 in French?
100 = cent
1,000 = mille
1,000,000 = un million
Keep in mind: cent takes an -s (→ cents) only when plural and not followed by another number (deux cents), mille never changes, and million is treated like a noun (deux millions d'euros).
