Why Canada is a Strong Choice for Learning English
Canada is a native-English-speaking country with one of the most multicultural populations in the world, which makes it a natural place to learn the language in daily life rather than only in the classroom. Two factors set it apart for adult learners.
A native-English, multicultural environment
English is one of Canada's two official languages, and in most of the country it is the everyday language of work, study, and social life. At the same time, the population is strikingly international. According to Statistics Canada (Census 2021), more than 20% of Canadians speak a language other than English or French at home. For someone who wants to learn English in Canada, this means there is no single dominant local accent or culture. International learners and locals share the same everyday language, which builds confidence quickly.
Quality-regulated language education
Canada's language-education sector is benchmarked by Languages Canada, a national association recognised by the federal government through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Membership requires independent inspection against teaching, accommodation, and student-welfare standards. Our SPRACHCAFFE school in Vancouver holds full Languages Canada accreditation, so the quality you book is independently verified.
Studying English in Vancouver
Most adults who study English in Vancouver are drawn by a city that consistently ranks among the world's most liveable. According to Mercer's Quality of Living City Ranking, Vancouver consistently ranks among the highest cities in North America for quality of living for international assignees and their families, assessed on infrastructure, healthcare, public services, safety, environment, and education access.
Life in Vancouver
The Pacific stretches to the west and the Coast Mountains rise to the north, and in between sits a city of distinct neighbourhoods and one of the most diverse populations anywhere. Our English school in Vancouver occupies a heritage building in the heart of Gastown, the city's historic district, within easy reach of the SkyTrain, local shops, Chinatown, and Stanley Park, one of the world's largest urban parks at over 400 hectares. After class, the afternoon is yours, from the food stalls and galleries nearby to a sunset walk along the waterfront.
Living with a homestay family
Homestay accommodation with a local Canadian family places you directly inside daily life, with half board included so breakfast and dinner become part of the routine. Breakfast conversations, evening chats, and weekend tips from people who actually live in the city are where English stops being something you practise and starts being something you simply use.
English Courses for Adults in Canada
Our English language courses in Canada follow CEFR levels from A1, complete beginner, to C1, advanced. All lessons run Monday to Friday and are taught by qualified teachers. New groups start every Monday throughout the year, and absolute beginners start on set dates. Every course includes the free Study Club, four additional supported sessions per week at no extra cost, where you can revisit the day's content, work through grammar questions, and get personalised help.

How long should you study
The right length depends on your goal. Two weeks gives you a genuine boost and a first taste of living and learning in Vancouver. Four to eight weeks allows measurable CEFR progression and time to settle into the city. For significant fluency gains, a gap year, or a semester abroad, longer stays of twelve weeks or more work best, and our long-stay programmes run from 8 to 24 weeks with an academic progress review every four weeks.
Entry, eTA and Planning Your Stay
For most learners, a short English course in Canada is possible without a study permit, with only an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) required. No embassy or consulate interview is needed for the eTA. Requirements still depend on your nationality and the length of your programme, so it is essential to check the current rules for your situation before you book. A placement test on your first day assigns you to the right class by level, and our team supports you with eTA and travel documents from your first enquiry through to your end-of-course certificate. For official entry requirements, we recommend the Government of Canada website.
SPRACHCAFFE Languages Plus has been organising adult language travel since 1983.

English is one of Canada's two official languages alongside French, and it is the most widely spoken language across most of the country, including British Columbia. According to Statistics Canada (Census 2021), more than 20% of Canadians speak a language other than English or French at home, which reflects how international the country is while English remains the shared everyday language.
Canada uses Canadian English, a variety that blends British and American features in spelling, vocabulary, and pronunciation. For learners this is an advantage, because exposure to Canadian English makes it easier to understand both British and American speakers later on.
English in Canada has historical roots in British settlement, and both English and French were confirmed as official languages under the federal Official Languages Act. Today English is the main language of education, business, and daily life in most provinces, including British Columbia.
The strongest English schools are those accredited by a recognised national body, with clear CEFR-based levels, small classes, and support outside the classroom. SPRACHCAFFE Vancouver holds full Languages Canada accreditation and teaches levels A1 to C1 in classes of up to 14, with a free Study Club included. You can compare formats on our Vancouver programme page.
The cost depends on the course type, the length of your stay, and the accommodation you choose, such as homestay with half board. Because prices and seasons change, the current rates are listed on our Vancouver programme page rather than here, so you always see up-to-date information.
For most short courses you do not need a study permit, but an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required, and no consulate interview is needed for it. Requirements vary by nationality and course length and can change, so check the current rules for your situation before booking. We recommend the official Government of Canada website for the latest entry requirements.
