Everything worth knowing about the USA
Hints and tricks
Tipping is a rule in the USA. It is expected that you will provide staff and workers with a tip, because staff and customer service workers are not payed very highly in a lot of cases. Each employee's tip is a part of their wage so to say. Hence anyone who enjoys their experience at the store or restaurant should give a good tip!
It is quite common to get your meal wrapped up in what is known as a 'doggy bag' in case you are not able to finish your food at a restaurant. This enables you to take your food home and finish it later.
Another thing you should know about restaurant etiquette is that you mustn't simply find and claim a seat by yourself. You must always wait for a waiter to allocate seats to you, especially at more expensive restaurants. The sign 'wait to be seated' can also be found at many restaurants and is meant to remind its visitors about this rule.
You never have to pay for using the bathroom in the USA, even in expensive hotels. You should however never use the word 'toilet'. Saying 'toilet' in the context of going to use the bathroom is considered very crude and may lower others' opinion of you. You can use the words 'restroom' or 'bathroom' at any point instead.
