Junior French camps in France

Nice is one of Europe's most rewarding cities for a teenage French immersion experience. SPRACHCAFFE has run supervised junior camps in Nice since 1998.

Our summer camps welcome teenagers aged 13 to 18, with 20 lessons per week (CEFR A1 to C1), full board in supervised residences, daily afternoon and evening activities, weekly excursions to Monaco and the Côte d'Azur, trained Teamers (20–30), and a structured curfew for under-18s. The school holds the official Qualité FLE label.

By the end of two to four weeks, your teenager hasn't just studied French, they've lived it: conversations at the Cours Saleya market, afternoons on the Promenade des Anglais, and evenings with classmates from across Europe and beyond.

Nice camps overview

Nice — ancient Nikaia, "Victory City" — blends Roman ruins, a medieval Old Town, and Belle Époque architecture along the French Riviera. The iconic Promenade des Anglais stretches 7 km along the Mediterranean coastline, perfect for after-class walks and group activities.

Nice enjoys approximately 300 days of sunshine per year and a mild Mediterranean climate — among the highest annual sunshine totals in Europe. The compact city centre is highly walkable, and the modern tram system makes getting around safe and easy for teenage students. Monaco is just 20 minutes by train, and the beaches of Cannes and the wider Côte d'Azur are equally close.

According to the Global Peace Index 2025, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace - the world's leading data-driven measure of peacefulness - France ranks in the global top 30% for societal safety and stability. The index measures 23 indicators across societal safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarisation across 163 countries.

Visa requirements depend on your teenager's nationality and the length of stay:

  • EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens can travel to France with a valid national ID card or passport. No visa is required.
  • Visa-exempt non-EU citizens (US, Canada, Australia, UK, Japan, and most Latin American countries) can enter France visa-free under the standard Schengen short-stay regime - up to 90 days within any 180-day period - sufficient for a full summer camp. From late 2025, the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) will require an additional online travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers.
  • Other non-EU nationalities may need a Schengen short-stay visa for any length of stay. These are applied for at the nearest French consulate via france-visas.gouv.fr.

The UK and most other countries also require children travelling without both parents to carry a consent letter signed by the absent parent(s). SPRACHCAFFE provides a letter of acceptance to support visa applications where required. Always check the current rules at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (france-visas.gouv.fr) or your local French consulate before booking.

Yes. SPRACHCAFFE provides an Unaccompanied Minor (UM) service where airlines require it. Most major airlines provide an unaccompanied-minor escort service for children aged approximately 5 to 12 (mandatory) and 13 to 17 (optional, by parental request). On arrival at Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE), SPRACHCAFFE staff or transfer providers meet the student and bring them directly to the residence.

Standard arrival is Sunday and standard departure is Saturday, with group transfers organised during these windows. Private transfers are available outside standard hours for an additional charge.

Frequently asked questions about language learning

For English speakers, Spanish is generally the easiest language to learn. Italian, French, Portuguese and Dutch follow closely, thanks to their similarities with English. The U.S. Foreign Service Institute groups them among the fastest languages to reach professional proficiency. With steady practice, real progress comes within months.

For English speakers, Mandarin Chinese and Arabic rank as the hardest languages to learn. Japanese and Korean follow close behind. The main challenges are new writing systems, pronunciation and grammar. None are impossible, though, and a clear structure keeps even these within reach.

The U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI) sets clear benchmarks for English speakers. Spanish, French or Italian need roughly 600 to 750 classroom hours to reach professional level. German takes around 900 hours. Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean need about 2,200 hours. Your own pace depends on study hours and real exposure. Intensive study abroad shortens these timelines significantly.

The best way to learn a language combines daily practice, speaking from the start and structured learning. Apps support your vocabulary, while tutors and classes add feedback and direction. Real-world use builds fluency. Most experts agree that consistency matters more than intensity.

Immersion is not strictly required, though it speeds learning up. Many people reach fluency through structured study combined with regular real-life practice. What counts most is your total hours of meaningful exposure. Language immersion simply increases that exposure. It also surrounds you with the natural speech, slang and culture that textbooks tend to miss.

We have offered language courses since 1983. We teach group and one-to-one courses in eight languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, and German as a foreign language. Our schools sit in Malta, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Cuba and Canada, with online courses too. In Malta, our school is located in St. Julian's. Courses run from one to 52 weeks. Standard group courses include 20 lessons per week of 45 minutes each, with an average class size of around ten learners. Every learner takes a CEFR placement test on arrival and joins a class at their level, from A1 to C2. Junior programmes for ages 12 to 17 include round-the-clock supervision, adult programmes start at age 18, and gap-year participants can take longer stays abroad. Our accreditations include EAQUALS, ALTO, FELTOM, the British Council, English UK and Instituto Cervantes, depending on the school.
